New BPH Treatment: Rezum Therapy

New BPH Treatment: After FDA Approval, San Antonio Doctor Becomes First Certified Provider in United States

A San Antonio doctor has become the first in the United States to be certified in performing a new BPH treatment for men with an enlarged prostate.  In late November, Urology San Antonio’s Dr. Christopher Cantrill successfully completed the requirements that made him the first Urologist in the nation to become a certified provider of the Rezūm (pronounced ruh-ZOOM) treatment for BPH.

Cantrill,Christopher - Urologist“What makes the Rezūm system unique is that it has the effectiveness of invasive surgery, but can be done in a single visit as out-patient procedure,” says Dr. Cantrill. “It’s a new option for guys who are tired of taking medications every day, or maybe those medications aren’t effective anymore, but they don’t want to undergo invasive surgery to remove part of their prostate.”

The Rezūm system uses very small, controlled doses of steam to damage the obstructing prostate cells which are then reabsorbed into the body naturally.

“It sure beats taking a pill every day,” says one patient who was part of the clinical trial for Rezūm at Urology San Antonio.  “Before the treatment I was getting up every night to use the bathroom – but not anymore.  That’s the biggest benefit I’ve seen.”

50% of all men over fifty have BPH, and 80% of all men over 80 have the condition.

“I knew percentage-wise that I would start having prostate trouble eventually,” says the patient, who is also a pharmacist.  “I was open to options that were non-surgical and didn’t involve pills, and that’s what really interested me about Rezūm.”

Urology San Antonio is currently one of only a few sites in the nation equipped treat BPH using Rezūm, and the only provider in Texas.
