We are pleased to share that Dr. Susan Talamini has brought her extensive experience in the HoLEP procedure to Urology San Antonio. Because of her expertise, we are now able to offer HoLEP to help patients suffering from the symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). It’s an advanced procedure that we’re proud to include in our suite of BPH treatment options. Dr. Talamini, who completed a fellowship at Washington University, has been offering the procedure since 2023.

What is BPH?

Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or enlarged prostate,  is one of the most common conditions affecting men, especially as they age. When the prostate gets large enough, it can put pressure on the urethra. This causes unwanted symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty urinating, or weak urine streams.

What is HoLEP?

HoLEP stands for holmium laser enucleation of the prostate. A holmium laser is a specific type of laser that is used for the procedure. During the procedure, the laser is used to destroy excess prostate tissue in men with enlarged prostates.

HoLEP may be an option for men with BPH that is causing signs of urinary obstruction. The laser can remove large amounts of tissue compared to other minimally invasive procedures. There is also a shorter recovery time than transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).
