Prostate Screenings
One man in six will develop prostate cancer. There are no symptoms for early-stage prostate cancer, but it can be detected through a screening. The American Urological Association says men should have their first screening at age 40. Usually doctors recommend that men repeat the screening annually, but depending on your unique risk factors, your doctor may suggest a different screening schedule.
The decision about whether you should be screening for prostate cancer depends on a variety of factors. This article provides tips to help you make a good decision and understand the pros and cons of screening.
Urology San Antonio offers prostate cancer screenings free at community venues twice a year. The two-part screening consists of a PSA blood test and a rectal exam performed by a urologist. These tests are simple and quick. Pre-screening preparations such as fasting are not necessary.
The following screenings are open to the public. No appointments will be taken; men will be seen in the order in which they arrive.
Your personal physician or urologist can provide your prostate screenings and has the advantage of knowing your entire medical history and risk factors. The following prostate screening events are intended for men who don’t have a physician or the means to be tested.
