Community Partnerships

 The value of service.
For physicians, helping others is a calling. It is the very nature of being a doctor and the heart of our business. Serving our community is a natural extension of our work. It is a value that guides us to give of our talents, time, influence, and finances in ways that improve lives.

Urology San Antonio is privileged to provide volunteer services, money, and other resources to the following community initiatives.

The Spirit of the Season 2009 : Project MEND
Each holiday season, Urology San Antonio celebrates the support of our referring physician and patients by making a donation a worthy non-profit organization. This year, in honor of our customers and colleagues, we are presenting a check to Project MEND, a San Antonio charity that refurbishes donated, durable medical equipment and distributes it to adults and children in need.

San Fernando Health and Safety Fair : Prostate Screening
In 1990, the rector of the San Fernando Cathedral called on local health care providers to offer their services at no charge to the medically underserved in downtown San Antonio. Led by Dr. Juan A. Reyna, Southwest Texas Urology Associates, now Urology San Antonio, responded by providing prostate cancer screenings. Since then, serving at the fair on the first Saturday in October has become an annual tradition for our doctors and staff.

Nix Health Care Foundation and Urology San Antonio Prostate Screening
In addition to providing free prostate cancer screenings at the San Fernando Health and Safety Fair, Urology San Antonio partners with the Nix Health Care Foundation to co-host an annual prostate screening in June. With the help of nearly 100 percent of our downtown clinic's doctors and staff as well as volunteers from our other locations, we are able to serve more than 160 men in less than two hours!

American Cancer Society : Cattle Baron's Gala
The western-themed Cattle Baron's Gala is the largest annual fundraiser for our local American Cancer Society. Monies raised through the gala fund cancer detection and prevention programs; patient services such as prosthetics, wigs, counseling, emergency financial aid and advocacy; and cancer research grants. Urology San Antonio has been a sponsor of the gala since 2006. In 2008, Dr. Juan A. Reyna, a cancer survivor, and his wife Joni co-chaired the event, which raised $438,000 – the largest amount to date.

Us TOO Prostate Cancer Education and Support Group - Alamo Chapter
The local chapter of Us TOO meets monthly to offer support and medical information to men and their families facing prostate cancer. Urology San Antonio physicians routinely serve as guest speakers at these meetings providing information about treatment options, clinical advances, and solutions for side effects. The practice also supports Us TOO International's advocacy and awareness efforts including its Sneakers At Work campaign. This yearly campaign invites employees to donate $5 toward prostate cancer research in exchange for the opportunity to wear tennis shoes to the office for a day.

Passionately Pink for the Cure : A Program of Susan G. Komen for the Cure
As a parallel to the Sneakers At Work prostate caner fundraiser, Urology San Antonio also encourages its employees to participate in Passionately Pink for the Cure, a breast cancer fundraiser sponsored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Employees who donate to the cause are invited to add a splash of pink and a special lapel pin to their uniform for the week.

Mexican American/Hispanic Physicians Association (MAHPA)
The Mexican American/Hispanic Physicians Association was founded in 1983 by a group of San Antonio doctors. The non-profit organization is dedicated to assisting and empowering minority students to pursue medical and health care careers and thereby improve the delivery of care to underserved groups. It's members provide endowed scholarships and mentor relationships to high school and medical school students. Dr. Juan A. Reyna is a founding member and past president of MAPHA. He, along with several of his Urology San Antonio colleagues, are active in the organization.

Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health
The Ecumenical Center provides faith-based counseling and education to help people find healing, growth, and wellness. The center relies on network of professionals from counseling, theological, and medical disciplines who help clients understand the role that spiritual, emotional  and physical well-being play their overall health. Dr. Christopher W. Graham serves on the board of directors for this organization and is leading an initiative to increase collaboration between medical doctors and counselors and ministers.
